Ground has been broken on 34 acres north of Anaquitas St. and south of Safe Dome. It will be the future home of the new Mercedes FedEx distribution facility.
Developer Setzer Properties, invested $850,000 with no incentive, which is great for the city.
“We are excited to get this project going after a year and a half of negotiations,” said EDC Executive Director Melissa Ramirez. “Once complete the freight facility is projected to bring 125 jobs to the City of Mercedes.”
Construction should take about a year with completion in August of 2019. The facility is expected to consist of 115 shipping docks. The widening of Anaquitas will prove beneficial in allowing traffic to flow smooth and easy access to Interstate 2.
A FedEx statement stated, access to major highways was a factor in building the new location. Mercedes is centrally located with is a benefit for the location.
Once complete it’s estimated that the property will be valued at $25 million and should increase the city’s property tax base by $186,000. This does not include sales tax revenues that will also increase in retail, commercial, and restaurants in the area.
“This will also increase future growth in this area, and we many more acres available for future growth,” Ramirez said.
The freight division of FedEx produced close to $7 billion in revenues.
