PUBLIC NOTICE
(March 15, 2020)

Due to the very contagious COVID-19 health threat, the City of Mercedes is always keeping in close contact with the County of Hidalgo’s health authorities, the CDC, and the Governor’s Office.  All agree that large gatherings are to be cancelled, if possible, in order to not intensify the risk of community spread.  In this regard, the City of Mercedes announces the following:

  • Municipal Court proceedings, which are normally held on a weekly basis on Wednesdays at Mercedes City Hall, are hereby cancelled. This will be evident until April 29  This six week tenure will be monitored to examine virus containment; however, should this tenure need to be extended, then that will be disclosed on or about mid-April 2020.
  • The City’s Easter event, scheduled for April 4, 2020 at HEB Park, is hereby cancelled. The risk appears to be too high due to the hundreds that were expected to attend.
  • Management has instructed Utility Billing that there are to be no disconnects to water meters due to non-payment. Mercedes families need to wash their hands (with soap) thus the practical need to keep running water in households during this crucial time.
  • City has been informed by the Chamber of Commerce that the Little Nashville monthly event (usually held on the last Thursday of the month) has been cancelled.
  • City has been informed by the Chamber of Commerce that the Chamber Awards Banquet, set for late March, has been cancelled, too.

As events, activities, or matters of public interest occur, Mercedes will do its best to provide such updates as soon as possible.  Again, we urge all to please wash your hands with soap (20 seconds), keep social distancing at 6’, refrain from large public gatherings, and see your private doctor if you feel flu-like symptoms or anything like unto it.
