PUBLIC NOTICE ON CAPACITY AT CITY’S
MASS GATHERING EVENTS/ACTIVITIES
(March 15, 2020)
After meeting this afternoon with RGValley Mayors and the Hidalgo County Judge’s Office, including the County’s health and emergency responding officials, the COVID-19 situation was intensely discussed. As a result of such a dialogue over such a serious health threat, it is the intent of the participating cities to adopt the CDC’s safety guidelines which includes no mass gatherings of over 50 persons.
A ‘mass gathering’ was defined as “a planned or spontaneous event with a large number of people in attendance that could strain the planning and response resources of the community hosting the event, such as a concert, festival, conference, or sporting event.”
For example, the City currently suspended Municipal Court hearings until April 29th since there’s well near 85 consistently in attendance. Other civic events have also been cancelled due to the risk of community spread.
In regard to Tuesday’s City Commission meeting, be advised that once the order is executed, only 50 people will be allowed in the City Commission meeting chambers. This order may be extended in duration depending on how the Coronavirus Disease is contained (or not). In order to use our technology to maximize the opportunity for interested citizens to view/listen to the City Commission meeting, we will be Live Streaming it on the City’s Facebook page.
We respectfully request your understanding and compliance to this capacity rule. Once it is seen that we can safely revert back to our normal capacity rule, we will similarly announce that on the City’s main page and other platforms. We thank you in advance for your patience while we navigate through this latest challenge.
