Brought to you by the University of Texas Libraries the Portal is a gateway to Texas history materials. You may discover anything from an ancestor’s picture in a college yearbook to a rare historical map. On September 1st 2014, the library was awarded $40,000 by the Ladd and Katherine Hancher Library Foundation. The $40,000 was solely provided to digitize the collection of Mercedes newspapers the library, had dating from 1914 to 2009. On October 17th, the large and fragile collection was hand delivered to the University of North Texas so the 38,690 pages could be digitized. The digitization is slated for completion on November 1st, 2015. Without the Hancher Library Foundation this project would not have taken place and local Mercedes newspapers would have continued to deteriorate and remained unavailable to the public due to their fragile condition. Thankfully, the entire collection will be available through the Portal to Texas History that the University of North Texas maintains. The Portal to Texas History is a free resource open to anyone in the world to explore. It currently boasts 611,974 unique items from all over Texas. A link to the Portal to Texas History is available on our site under Electronic Resources as well as by selecting the images above. We encourage everyone to explore the site and learn more about this great state and its history.
